Topic of the Week
Today we discuss why sleep is essential for optimum health. We discuss the effects of sleep deprivation, the average hours of sleep a person needs and ways to improve one’s sleep.

Here are some suggestions:

1. If your medication is keeping you awake, talk to your doctor and see if you can change the time, dose or take an alternative one that doesn’t disrupt your sleep.

2. If you are having pain, try to get your pain under control.

3. Get the T.V. out of your room.

4. Make the room darker by reducing ambient light.

5. Avoid strenuous mental and physical activity before bedtime.

6. Avoid alcohol and caffeine before sleep.

If, after making these lifestyle changes, you are still unable to maintain a regular sleeping schedule then it is time to seek medical advice. Poor sleep at any age is detrimental to one’s health and needs to be resolved.
